Senapati, July 21, 2024 – In a significant development aimed at ensuring the safety and well-being of commuters along National Highway 2 (NH2), the Naga People’s Organization (NPO) and the Committee of Tribal Unity (COTU), along with the COTU advisory board, held a joint meeting on July 18, 2024, at the NPO Office in Senapati.
During the meeting, COTU extended an apology for the recent extreme atrocities committed against Naga commuters at Motbung. The discussion culminated in a mutual agreement addressing key grievances raised by the Naga community.
Key Points of Agreement:
- End to Unnecessary Frisking and Harassment: COTU has committed to halting any unnecessary frisking and harassment of commuters along NH2. This measure aims to restore a sense of security and freedom of movement for all travelers on this vital route.
- Cease of Illegal Extortion: The agreement includes a pledge to stop any illegal extortion practices targeting Naga commercial vehicles. This step is expected to alleviate the financial burden and distress faced by Naga traders and transporters.
- Uninterrupted Travel During Shutdowns: COTU has assured that any sudden total shutdowns or blockades will not affect Naga commuters. This provision is crucial in maintaining the flow of essential services and ensuring that Naga travelers are not unduly inconvenienced during such events.
Kuki leaders present at the meeting have agreed to address these concerns within seven days. In the event of non-compliance, the NPO has stated that they will initiate agitation measures to counter the lack of action.
Appeal to SDSA: Following this positive development, the Senapati District Students’ Association (SDSA) has been urged to call off their current agitation. The NPO believes that the agreement reached with COTU will pave the way for improved relations and a more harmonious environment for all communities along NH2.
The NPO’s press statement on July 21, 2024, underscores the importance of unity and cooperation in addressing and resolving issues that impact the community. The organization remains hopeful that the agreed measures will be implemented promptly, fostering a safer and more peaceful passage for all commuters on NH2.
