Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked the 25th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas with a poignant tribute to India’s soldiers at the Kargil War Memorial in Dras, Ladakh today. Remembering the valor and sacrifices of the armed forces during the 1999 conflict, PM Modi emphasized India’s unwavering commitment to peace and security in the region.
Addressing a gathering at the memorial, PM Modi delivered a strong message to Pakistan, accusing it of sheltering terrorists and perpetuating instability. He asserted, “Pakistan has not learned from its history. Today, I speak from a place where the patrons of terrorism can hear my voice directly. Their nefarious intentions will never succeed. Our soldiers will crush terrorism with full force and the enemy will be given a befitting reply.”
On July 26, 1999, the Indian Army declared the success of “Operation Vijay,” reclaiming positions from Pakistani infiltrators on the Indian side of the Line of Control (LoC) in the Kargil sector after a nearly three-month battle in Ladakh. This day is annually observed as ‘Kargil Vijay Diwas’ to commemorate India’s triumph in the conflict against Pakistan.
“Today, Ladakh witnesses the 25th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi remarked. “This occasion reminds us that the sacrifices made for our nation will forever be remembered.”
The Prime Minister also inaugurated the commencement of the Shinkun La tunnel project, marking a significant milestone in infrastructure development in Ladakh. The tunnel, set to be the world’s highest at an elevation of 15,800 feet upon completion, aims to enhance connectivity and facilitate economic growth in the region.
Amid recent controversies, PM Modi criticized opposition parties for politicizing the Agnipath recruitment scheme for the Army, stressing that national security remains the government’s top priority. He dismissed allegations of financial motives, reaffirming that decisions regarding defense reforms are made with long-term strategic interests in mind.
Highlighting the progress in Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir, PM Modi noted significant advancements in infrastructure and tourism sectors. Looking towards the future, he expressed optimism about the region’s development trajectory, particularly on the eve of the fifth anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370.
