Shillong, July 29: The tourism sector in Meghalaya is reeling from a significant blow following recent disruptions by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and pressure groups targeting tourists in key destinations. The incidents, which unfolded on July 26, have led to a dramatic 30% drop in bookings and a concerning 50% potential cancellation rate for tours.
The controversy began when members of the Hynniewtrep National Youth Federation (HNYF) halted vehicles from Assam at the Umtyngar junction, approximately 20 kilometers from Shillong. The group, citing regional grievances, demanded that these vehicles—carrying tourists to the popular spots of Sohra and Dawki—turn back.
Tourism stakeholders have issued a strong condemnation of these actions, describing them as severely damaging to the state’s reputation and economy. They have reported not only a significant financial impact but also growing concerns over safety and lawlessness. Recent violent incidents against workers and a US travel advisory have exacerbated the situation, prompting urgent calls for restored peace and order.
The statement from the industry representatives addressed the HNYF’s controversial demand for a policy to restrict the entry of outside-registered vehicles carrying tourists. Despite police efforts to manage the situation and maintain order, the disruptions have cast a shadow over the state’s tourism prospects.
In response to the turmoil, tourism stakeholders have issued an apology for any inconvenience caused and have urged travelers to continue visiting Meghalaya. They reassured potential tourists of the state’s natural beauty, warm hospitality, and the welcoming nature of its people, despite the recent challenges.
What the organisation is doing is good and bad at the same time 😄
HNYF should find alternative to achieve their goals instead of directly disrupting the tourist.
Let’s hope for solution soon!
