In a setback for India, wrestler Vinesh Phogat has been disqualified from the 50kg freestyle wrestling event at the Tokyo Olympics for being overweight by a few grams, just before her gold medal match.

Phogat had previously made headlines by defeating World No.1 and Tokyo 2020 champion Yui Susaki of Japan, followed by a win over Ukraine’s Oksana Livach in the quarter-finals. She then triumphed over Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez in the semi-finals, becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to reach an Olympic final.

Despite her remarkable performances, Phogat was disqualified after exceeding the 50kg limit by a small margin on the morning of the final. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) expressed regret over the disqualification in a statement: “It is with regret that we announce the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat from the Women’s Wrestling 50kg class. Despite the team’s best efforts, she weighed in slightly over 50kg this morning. We will not be making further comments at this time.”
