In protest against the horrific rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College, doctors across India have initiated an indefinite strike. Medical professionals in cities including Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata are halting all elective procedures until a comprehensive investigation is completed. The strike also demands improved security measures for healthcare staff.
The protest follows the discovery of the 32-year-old doctor’s body in a seminar hall at RG Kar Medical College last Thursday. The initial autopsy revealed severe injuries and bleeding from various parts of her body.
City Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal visited the hospital for the second time in three days to address the concerns of the protesting doctors. He assured that the investigation is being handled transparently and asked the public to avoid spreading rumors.
Following the incident, Prof. (Dr.) Sandip Ghosh resigned as Principal of RG Kar Medical College & Hospital, citing personal distress and social media criticism. He expressed that the victim was like a daughter to him and described his resignation as a personal decision.
Police have arrested Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer who frequented the hospital but had no official connection to it. Roy is alleged to have attempted to destroy evidence by washing his clothes after the crime.
