Imphal, Aug 15: During the 78th Independence Day celebrations, Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh emphasized his government’s dedication to restoring peace in the state, stressing the importance of unity among its 34 recognized tribes.
Addressing the gathering at 1st Manipur Rifles Parade ground, Singh attributed the recent unrest to external forces aiming to destabilize the state. He reiterated that Manipur belongs to all its communities, including Thadou, Hmar, Simte, Meitei, Tangkhul, Mao, Maram, Anal, and Lamkang, and urged everyone to come together for a stronger, united India.
Reflecting on the violence of May 3, 2023, Singh acknowledged the setbacks it caused but expressed confidence in Manipur’s capacity to recover and advance. “Had it not been for the violence, the progress and development Manipur would have achieved now would be unimaginable. We are committed to working harder to make up for the lost time,” he said.
Singh revealed that the crisis was exacerbated by external elements seeking to incite unrest and warned of the severe consequences had proactive measures not been taken. He called for an end to political and personal agendas that hinder peace, highlighting that unity and transparency are crucial for resolving the conflict.
The Chief Minister assured that the government is actively supporting those affected by the violence, providing essential services to those in relief camps, and working on resettling Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). He also highlighted key infrastructure projects aimed at improving connectivity and easing congestion in Imphal.
Singh concluded by calling on all communities to put aside differences and work together for peace and development in Manipur.
