Guwahati, Sept 12: A violent confrontation broke out between police and residents in Kosutoli, Sonapur, on Thursday during an eviction operation, leaving two people dead. The victims, Haider Ali and Juwahid Ali, succumbed to injuries from police firing and were declared dead at Sonapur District Hospital.
The eviction drive, targeting around 150 alleged illegal settlers occupying a 100-bigha plot of land, had proceeded without incident in previous days. However, tensions flared on Thursday when residents resisted, attacking police with sticks and sharp objects.
The clash left multiple individuals injured, including Shahjahan Ali, who was shot in the leg, as well as Revenue Circle Officer Nitul Khatoniar and four police officers, one of whom was a female constable. All injured parties were taken to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for treatment.
According to reports, residents also threw stones at police vehicles, further injuring officers. In response, police fired warning shots, which allegedly resulted in the deaths of the two men.
An investigation into the fatal shootings is ongoing, and authorities have yet to release more information. Tensions in Kosutoli remain high following the incident.
