Aizawl, Sept 13:    The Young Lai Association (YLA), the largest civil organization in Lawngtlai district of Mizoram, has endorsed the Centre’s proposal to fence the Indo-Myanmar border. The YLA believes this measure will significantly reduce smuggling and crime within Mizoram, while ensuring that legal travel and wildlife migration remain unaffected.

In a meeting with B. Shyam, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), who is currently visiting Aizawl, YLA leaders stressed the urgent need for border fencing, citing instability in Myanmar. They highlighted that the fencing would include check gates to facilitate legal travel and designated areas to ensure migratory animals are not impacted.

The YLA also expressed their support for India’s Act East Policy and discussed progress on the Kaladan Multi Modal Transit Transport Project (KMMTTP). Additionally, they emphasized the importance of implementing regular border trade at Zorinpui (Zochachhuah) and called for establishing immigration check posts and border commercial haats to boost local commerce.

The YLA’s backing comes at a time of heightened concerns over security along the border due to ongoing unrest in Myanmar.
