Senapati, April 10, 2024: Former UNC President Kho John launched his election campaign for the Outer Manipur parliamentary seat with a massive rally at the Sanyi Dahrii Sports Complex in Karong today. The event saw an impressive turnout, with supporters cutting across tribal lines thronging to back the veteran leader’s candidacy.
John, who is contesting as an independent after being denied a ticket by his former party, seemed to have struck a chord with the audience from diverse communities. Attendees from tribes like Naga, Kuki, and others were seen enthusiastically cheering and waving flags during the well-attended program.
The 68-year-old leader also promised to work towards restoring lasting peace and development if elected. “We have seen enough violence and strife. I will strive to heal old wounds and bring communities together through inclusive policies,” John stated.
As polling day of May 6th draws closer, whether the multi-tribal backing for John translates into actual votes or gets impacted by other factors, remains to be seen.
The Outer Manipur seat is being keenly watched after decades of ethnic strife in the region made it a difficult terrain for any political party to make decisive inroads.
