External Affairs Ministry has issued a travel advisory urging Indian citizens and students in Bangladesh to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel amidst escalating unrest in the country.
The advisory comes in response to violent clashes that erupted in Dhaka following the Bangladesh government’s decision to close all universities in the wake of widespread protests. The demonstrations are centered around demands for reform of the civil service quota system, which reserves positions for specific groups, including descendants of individuals who participated in the 1971 war of independence.
In an advisory the Indian High Commission in Dhaka said “In view of the ongoing situation in Bangladesh, the Indian community members and the Indian students residing in Bangladesh are advised to avoid travel and minimise their movement outside their living premises”.
The Indian embassy have also set up emergency helplines in Chittagong, Sylhet, and Khulna to assist Indian nationals in need of urgent support during this period of unrest.
