Guwahati: Assam’s Charaideo Maidam has secured a coveted place on the UNESCO World Heritage list under the category of Cultural Property. This historic recognition not only marks a significant milestone for the northeastern state but also shines a global spotlight on India’s rich and diverse cultural heritage.
Charaideo Maidam, known for its ‘Moidams’—distinctive burial mounds with pyramid-like structures—dates back to the era of the Tai-Ahom dynasty. These ancient sites hold profound historical and cultural significance, symbolizing the spiritual and political center of the kingdom.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to social media to express his joy, extending gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, and the people of Assam for their contributions towards achieving this prestigious status.
“The inscription of Charaideo Maidam on the UNESCO World Heritage list is a matter of immense pride for Assam and India,” remarked Chief Minister Sarma. “It highlights our commitment to preserving our cultural legacy and promoting the rich heritage of the northeastern region.”
The inclusion of Charaideo Maidam as India’s first cultural site from the northeast on the UNESCO list signifies a significant milestone in the region’s cultural preservation efforts. It not only enhances global recognition but also underscores the importance of safeguarding unique cultural landmarks that reflect the country’s diverse heritage.
