Introduction: The Script Controversy

The All Naga Business Association, Imphal (ANBA-Imphal), has recently raised a significant issue that has been troubling Naga shopkeepers in Imphal. Reports have surfaced that some executive members of the Meetei Erol Eyek Loinasillol Apunba Lup (MEELAL) have been demanding explanations for the absence of the Meetei Mayek script on their signboards. This has led to undue summoning and pressure on the shopkeepers, raising questions about the legality and constitutionality of such demands.

Legal and Constitutional Standpoint

India, with its rich tapestry of languages, recognizes various local languages and scripts as per the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India. However, neither the state government nor the central government, nor any civil society organizations (CSOs) have imposed any language or script as compulsory. The actions by MEELAL members demanding the inclusion of Meetei Mayek script on signboards are arbitrary and unconstitutional. Such actions amount to mental harassment, which is against the law of the land.

Questioning the Legitimacy

The pressing question remains: Under which act or laws is it mandated to compulsorily write, mention, or add any particular language script on signboards, advertisements, or banners? The absence of any legal basis for these demands makes MEELAL’s actions not just overreaching but also unlawful.

Appeal for Intervention

ANBA-Imphal has made a heartfelt appeal to all concerned parties to cease the unnecessary pressure and disturbance of Naga shopkeepers operating in Imphal. Such actions could lead to misunderstandings and communal tensions among the various communities living in Manipur. The association urges the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Manipur for immediate intervention to address this critical situation. It is imperative to take necessary measures to ensure the effective enforcement of law and order, creating a secure and free environment for all residents.
