Empowering Women: Ukhrul Seminar Focuses on Women-Centric Legislation

Ukhrul:   A seminar dedicated to women-centric legislation took place in Ukhrul on Friday, uniting experts, students, and community members to explore laws and policies designed to empower women. 

Judicial Magistrate, PA. Phungreisung, reviewed the progress in women’s rights since World War II, noting India’s adoption of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) in 1980.

Dr. Chingri Vashum, Legal Researcher, highlighted the significance of financial empowerment for women, discussing initiatives like Mission Shakti and the 6% allocation in the Union Budget (2024-25) aimed at women’s protection and advancement. She examined various schemes and laws related to this goal.

The seminar, which drew participation from Ukhrul Police Women, students, anganwadi workers, and staff from ICDS and OSC, sought to raise awareness on women’s rights issues, including sexual harassment, abortion, and violence.

The event was part of the 100 Days Special Awareness Campaign under SANKALP: HEW, a collaborative effort by the District Administration, ICDS, DHEW, DSLA, and OSC, aiming to foster positive change and enhance women’s empowerment in Ukhrul.

Senapati should organize this type of events to awareness and protect the interest of women. we also need to address the topics such as women’s rights issues, including sexual harassment, abortion, and violence. Also, man should be taught how to treat women.
