New Delhi: Rajya Sabha MP Sanajaoba has urged that Khwairamband Ema Keithel be officially recognized as a living cultural heritage site during the current Parliament session today. Speaking during the zero hour, he emphasized the market’s significance as a key socio-economic and cultural landmark.
Located in Imphal’s center, Khwairamband Ema Keithel is a distinctive economic center managed entirely by women and has long been a cornerstone of Manipur’s economy. MP Sanajaoba highlighted the market’s role beyond just commerce, noting its historical importance. He recalled that women from Manipur played vital roles in the Nupi Lal (women’s wars) against British colonial rule in 1904 and 1939, with many being vendors at the market.
Calling Khwairamband Ema Keithel a model of women’s economic empowerment and a symbol of Nari Shakti (women’s power), MP Sanajaoba proposed that it be recognized under Article 51A of the Indian Constitution, which supports the preservation of cultural heritage.
Additionally he appealed the Union government to ensure its protection and preservation as an essential socio-economic landmark under Article 49, which deals with the conservation of historical and cultural monuments.
Let’s bring peace; development will come with peace amongst the communities 🙏
Surely Khwairamband Ema Keithel is a symbol of women empowerment and therefore should be recognized as a cultural heritage.
