Dhaka: President Mohammed Shahabuddin has declared that an interim government will be established following the dissolution of Parliament. This announcement was made during a crucial meeting with political leaders, civil society figures, and top military officials at Bangabhaban.
The President’s decision comes amidst escalating political unrest. As part of the interim measures, Khaleda Zia, the BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister, will be released from house arrest, where she had been held following several convictions. Additionally, all students arrested during recent protests will also be freed, indicating a potential de-escalation of tensions.
In a dramatic development, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and left the country on a military aircraft yesterday, prompting the army to step in to manage the resulting power vacuum. The army’s media wing, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), announced that Army Chief Gen Wakar-Uz-Zaman will soon meet with student and teacher representatives to address their concerns.
The army has also declared that all government and semi-government offices, private businesses, and educational institutions, including schools and universities, will reopen today to restore normalcy.
