Indian President Droupadi Murmu has reaffirmed India’s dedication to enhancing its partnership with Fiji during her significant state visit. Speaking to the Fijian Parliament on Tuesday, President Murmu emphasized the mutual benefits of increased collaboration between the two nations.
“With India’s growing influence globally, we are eager to work with Fiji according to your priorities to build a stronger, more resilient, and prosperous future. Let’s join forces to fully realize the potential of our partnership for the benefit of both our countries,” President Murmu stated.
She highlighted the broad cooperation between the nations in sectors such as healthcare, manufacturing, research, and renewable energy, and stressed the continued importance of joint efforts in agriculture, climate change, clean energy, and education. Murmu also praised India’s role in Fiji’s COVID-19 vaccination success through the Vaccine Maitri initiative.
Celebrating 75 years of diplomatic relations, President Murmu noted recent high-level engagements and the impact of the FIPIC-3 Summit in May 2023, which has revitalized their bilateral ties. A key outcome of her visit is the announcement of a super-specialty cardiology hospital in Suva to address Fiji’s healthcare needs.
Murmu was honored with Fiji’s highest civilian award, the ‘Companion of the Order of Fiji,’ reflecting the strong friendship between the two countries. She also recognized Fiji’s achievements in sports, including the national rugby team’s Olympic silver medal and the contributions of Waisale Serevi.
Her visit marks the first time an Indian President has traveled to Fiji. During her stay, she met with Fijian President Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere, discussing ways to deepen bilateral ties and observing the progress of the ‘Solarization of Heads of State Residences’ project. President Murmu will continue her trip to New Zealand and Timor-Leste.
