‘Lithic Worlds’ at Makhel: An Epochal Event on Indigenous Ecology and Pedagogy

Punanamei, Aug 5: The Asufii Christian Institute (ACI) and the University of California, Santa Cruz co-hosted a two-day event titled ‘Lithic Worlds: Indigenous Ecology and Pedagogy’ at the historic Makhel Village. The program aimed to explore and celebrate the deep-rooted connections between Indigenous cultures, their environment, and their history.

Organized by Anthropologist Dolly Kikon (UC Santa Cruz), Geologist Neivikhotso Chaya (Gauhati University), Sociologist Daili Neli(ACI) and Political Scientist Kaini Lokho (ACI), the event highlighted the enduring spirit of Indigenous peoples. It emphasized how the village’s deep histories of land, geology, and time are interwoven through elements like salt, stories, and spiritual beliefs.

The program commenced with a traditional blessing by the Chief of Makhel, S. Pfokreni, and a welcome address from Mr. Loli Kape, the Chairman of the Makhel Village Council. The Women Society of Makhel also performed a special cultural number.

The event featured an art exhibition titled ‘Old Ocean in the Eastern Himalayas’ and included a field trip to significant heritage sites within the village. These activities, involving residents of Makhel, students, faculty from ACI, and village council members, aimed to underscore the essence of Indigenous identity and celebrate the profound connection with the environment, ecology, and culture. The exhibition explored the geological history and cultural relationships within the Naga homeland, reflecting the intricate bond between people and their surroundings.

‘Lithic Worlds’ is a research initiative designed to reflect on and engage with Indigenous wisdom and life worlds. By combining ethnography, oral traditions, and geological knowledge, the program seeks to bridge past and present understandings to envision a sustainable future.
