Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has expressed deep concern over the escalating situation in Bangladesh, fearing that the country might once again become a base for insurgents and that illegal migration into Northeast India could rise. Sarma discussed these issues noting the potential threats posed by the unrest in Bangladesh.
He pointed out that under Sheikh Hasina’s leadership, Bangladesh had been effective in driving out insurgents from Northeast India. However, the current instability could reverse these gains, making Bangladesh a potential refuge for insurgent groups.
Recent anti-government protests in Bangladesh have led to over 440 fatalities, with the military now involved in efforts to stabilize the situation. The political landscape in Bangladesh has also shifted, with Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus appointed as the head of the interim government following the resignation and escape of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Sarma expressed confidence that the Indian government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, would address these concerns and prevent Bangladesh from becoming a haven for insurgents again. He also shared a vision for a hopeful future for Assam, emphasizing the need to protect borders and cultural heritage during these uncertain times.
he has the state police under him so he can stop the problems from spilling into Indian Territory.
