Vinesh Phogat made history on Tuesday by becoming the first Indian woman to advance to an Olympic wrestling final. She secured her spot with a commanding 5-0 win over Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez in the women’s freestyle 50kg semi-final.
This victory assures Phogat of at least a silver medal, and she will now compete for gold against Ann Sarah Hildebrandt of the USA.
The semi-final began cautiously, but Phogat capitalized on a passivity clock against Lopez to take a 1-0 lead. She extended her advantage with four additional points in the second period.
Earlier, Phogat had caused a major upset by defeating Ukraine’s Oksana Livach and by beating reigning gold medallist Yui Susaki of Japan in the quarter-finals.
This is Phogat’s first Olympic final appearance after missing out on medals in her previous two Games.
What a tragic end after disqualified by few grams over weight after reaching such a feat.
Was hoping for atleast a gold or silver from her but it’s so unfortunate that she got disqualified.
very very unfortunate that you got kicked out
