The NSCN(Yung Aung) and ULFA (Independent) have given the call to boycott India’s Independence Day. The groups have also announced a total shutdown in Assam, Manipur, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh on August 15 to protest India’s Independence Day. 

The shutdown will be in effect from midnight to 8:00 PM, with the groups urging supporters to stay indoors as part of their call for resistance under the theme “One People One Region One Vision.”

According to their joint press release, emergency services, media, and religious activities will be exempt from the shutdown. The groups have described India’s Independence Day as a “colonialist symbol” designed to mislead the international community and perpetuate the illegal control over the Wesean region. They argue that the celebration serves only to mask ongoing repression and the suppression of the region’s rightful aspirations for autonomy.

Further, NSCN (YA) and ULFA (IND) have claimed that Independence Day offers nothing to the region but a painful reminder of continued Indian rule. They asserted that it dishonors the Wesean people’s sacrifices for reclaiming their sovereignty. 

The groups also declared that the day will remain a “Black Day” in the ongoing Wesean struggle for independence.
