In a landmark cultural achievement, 13-year-old Lei Muzi became the first student fully trained in China to perform a Bharatanatyam Arangetram, marking a significant moment in the global reach of this ancient Indian dance form.
Lei’s solo debut took place on August 11 in Beijing, in front of an audience that included Indian diplomats, renowned Bharatanatyam dancer Leela Samson, and an enthusiastic group of Chinese admirers. This performance is the first of its kind, as Lei is the first student, trained entirely in China by the esteemed Chinese Bharatanatyam dancer Jin Shan Shan, to complete this traditional milestone.
The Arangetram, which signifies a dancer’s readiness to perform solo after years of intense training, is a significant rite of passage in Bharatanatyam. Lei’s journey began a decade ago under the tutelage of Jin, who nurtured her deep love for the dance form, which Lei describes as “a beautiful art and a true reflection of Indian culture.”
The event, steeped in tradition, received high praise from T.S. Vivekanand, the First Secretary of the Indian Embassy in Beijing, who called it a “historic moment in the evolution of Bharatanatyam in China.” Lei’s two-hour performance featured several classical pieces, accompanied by live musicians from Chennai.
Jin Shan Shan, who has performed extensively in China and India, expressed deep pride in her student. “For a decade, Lei attended classes at my home every weekend. Seeing her complete her Arangetram feels like a personal triumph,” Jin remarked.
This performance not only showcases the growing popularity of Indian classical arts in China but also enhances cultural connections between the two nations. Lei Muzi is scheduled to perform next in Chennai later this month, solidifying her role as a cultural ambassador between India and China.
Wow I never thought Bharatnatyam is as famous as this.
