NewDelhi: Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Advisor of Bangladesh’s interim government, spoke with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, marking their first communication since the resignation of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on August 5.
During the conversation, Yunus assured Modi that the interim administration is committed to safeguarding Hindus and other minority groups in Bangladesh amidst ongoing violence.
Prime Minister Modi shared the details of the call on X, stating, “Received a call from Professor Muhammad Yunus. We discussed the current situation and reiterated India’s support for a democratic, stable, and progressive Bangladesh. He assured the protection and security of Hindus and all minorities in the country.”
The interim government, led by Yunus since August 8, faces significant challenges in addressing the violence affecting minority communities. Modi, during his Independence Day speech, expressed his concern about the situation in Bangladesh. “The current state of affairs in our neighboring country is very troubling. We hope for a resolution soon. All 140 crore Indians are concerned about the safety of Hindus and other minorities there. India is committed to supporting peace and progress,” Modi stated.
The Prime Minister also emphasized India’s continued support for Bangladesh’s development, noting, “We wish well for Bangladesh’s journey of development and remain committed to fostering peace.”
In an interview with IANS late Thursday, Abul Fayez Muhammad Khalid Hossain, Advisor for Religious Affairs in the interim government, labelled India as Bangladesh’s “best neighbour” and acknowledged India’s crucial support during Bangladesh’s independence struggle.
Hossain confirmed that efforts are underway to address the violence against minorities. “We are committed to taking strict action against those responsible for these incidents and maintaining peaceful relations with India,” he said, reflecting the interim government’s aim to strengthen bilateral ties and address criticisms regarding its handling of the situation.
I hope he actually protects them.
