Imphal: The Pambei-led United National Liberation Front (UNLF) has penalized 28 individuals involved in organizing a rock concert on August 13, Patriots’ Day, citing that the event disrespected the significance of the occasion. The penalties, announced by the UNLF, include bans on participating bands and restrictions on the co-sponsoring television network, MAMI TV.
The concert, organized by the All Manipur Football Association (AMFA) at Khuman Lampak’s Astro Turf Ground, drew criticism for failing to honor the historical importance of the day, which commemorates the 1891 public execution of Manipur’s heroes, Yuvraj Tikendrajit and Thangal General. Since 1969, UNLF has observed Patriots’ Day with solemn ceremonies and tributes.
Before issuing the penalties, the 28 individuals were presented to the media in Imphal by UNLF’s Department of Publicity staff officer, L Keiphaba, who underscored the day’s significance. The sanctions include a six-month ban on the Innocent Eyes and Leipung bands, and a one-year ban on Pebet Band and God and Dog Band for their “excessive conduct” at the event. These bands, however, are allowed to continue practicing and rehearsing.
MAMI TV, the event’s co-sponsor, is barred from airing entertainment content for six months starting August 13, though it may still broadcast news-related programs. Additionally, AMFA officials directly involved in organizing the concert have been ordered to step down, with new officials to be elected to fill their positions.
UNLF has cautioned that any breaches of these restrictions will lead to further action and has urged other organizations not to take additional punitive measures against the 28 individuals already penalized.
