A tragic bus accident in Nepal’s Tanahun district claimed 14 lives and injured 16 others on Friday. The Indian passenger bus, traveling from Pokhara to Kathmandu, was carrying 40 Indian nationals when it plunged into the Marsyangdi River.
DSP Deepkumar Raya reported that the bus, with the number plate UP FT 7623, went off the road and fell into the river near Aaina Pahara. The top of the bus was severed, and debris was found along the riverbank.
A rescue team of 45 police officers, led by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Madhav Paudel from the Armed Police Force Nepal Disaster Management Training School, is on-site conducting operations. The Indian passengers had been staying at Majheri Resort in Pokhara before setting out for Kathmandu on Friday morning.
The Uttar Pradesh Relief Commissioner is working to confirm if any passengers from the state were involved, as reported by ANI.
Nepal’s rugged terrain and river systems frequently lead to such disasters. Last month, a landslide caused two buses to fall into the Trishuli River, resulting in over 50 presumed fatalities, including seven Indians.
The latest accident occurred during heavy rainfall on the Madan-Ashrit Highway. One of the buses was traveling from Kathmandu to Gaur in Rautahat, while the other was headed from Birgunj to Kathmandu.
