New Delhi: India is celebrating its first National Space Day today to commemorate the one-year milestone of Chandrayaan-3’s successful moon landing one year ago, with President Droupadi Murmu emphasizing ISRO’s significant contributions to both space exploration and the country’s socio-economic progress.
Addressing the event, President Murmu highlighted how advancements in space have enhanced human capabilities, transformed visions into reality, and unveiled the universe’s secrets.
Minister of State for Space, Dr. Jitendra Singh, commended the Narendra Modi administration for overcoming the past era of secrecy in the space sector, which had restricted progress and access to resources. He pointed out that for nearly 70 years, the space industry was constrained by self-imposed secrecy, limiting its growth and potential.
ISRO Chairman S. Somanath noted that National Space Day was being widely observed across India, with participation from various departments, ministries, educational institutions, science organizations, NGOs, and the public. He remarked on the significant enthusiasm surrounding the day’s celebrations.
During the event, President Murmu presented awards to the winners of ISRO’s Robotics Challenge and the Bharatiya Antariksh Hackathon, honoring their contributions to space technology and innovation. This year’s National Space Day theme, “Touching Lives while Touching the Moon: India’s Space Saga,” represents India’s remarkable space journey and its benefits to society.
