Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Kyiv today marked a historic milestone as he became the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Ukraine since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1992. During his visit, Modi and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a high-level meeting that resulted in the signing of four Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) designed to strengthen bilateral cooperation.
The agreements address community development initiatives in Ukraine, standards for drug control, cultural exchanges, and agricultural collaboration. Dr. S. Jaishankar, India’s External Affairs Minister, provided details on the discussions, which encompassed trade, economic matters, defense, pharmaceuticals, and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Dr. Jaishankar noted that Modi underscored the need for genuine and constructive engagement among all parties involved to develop practical solutions for peace. Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to supporting efforts aimed at restoring peace in the region.
During his visit, Modi also paid a heartfelt visit to the National Museum of History of Ukraine, where he and President Zelenskyy viewed an exhibition dedicated to children who have died due to the conflict. Modi, moved by the exhibit, placed a toy in remembrance of the lost children and expressed his sorrow. Additionally, Modi paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at his statue in Kyiv, highlighting the enduring relevance of Gandhi’s teachings on peace and harmony.
