India Successfully Launches First Reusable Hybrid Rocket ‘RHUMI-1’ for Climate Research

Chennai:    India has achieved a major breakthrough in space technology with the successful launch of its first reusable hybrid rocket, ‘RHUMI-1’, on Saturday. Developed by Tamil Nadu-based start-up Space Zone India in partnership with the Martin Group, the rocket was launched from Thiruvidandhai, Chennai.

The RHUMI-1 rocket, designed for a suborbital mission, carried three Cube Satellites and 50 PICO Satellites, which will gather crucial data for research on global warming and climate change. The launch was conducted using a mobile launcher.

A standout feature of the RHUMI-1 rocket is its hybrid motor, which combines the benefits of both liquid and solid propellants to enhance efficiency and lower operational costs. The rocket is also equipped with an electrically triggered parachute deployer, making it entirely pyrotechnic-free and TNT-free, which enhances safety.

The mission was led by Anand Megalingam, founder of Space Zone India, with mentorship from Dr. Mylswamy Annadurai, former Director of the ISRO Satellite Centre (ISAC).

Space Zone India, based in Chennai, is an aerospace technology company focused on providing affordable, sustainable solutions in the space industry. The company also emphasizes education and training, offering hands-on experience in fields such as aerodynamic principles, satellite technology, drone technology, and rocket technology. Space Zone India collaborates with private institutions, engineering colleges, and both private and government schools to promote awareness of career opportunities in the space sector.

In 2023, Space Zone India led the ‘Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Students Satellite Launch’ mission, which involved over 2,500 students from government, tribal, and public schools across India. These students played a key role in designing and building a student satellite launch vehicle capable of carrying a payload of 150 PICO satellite research experiment cubes, reflecting the company’s commitment to engaging young talent in the nation’s space efforts.
