A Bangladeshi student at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar, Assam, was sent back to Bangladesh after reacting to an anti-India post on social media. Maisha Mahajabin, a fourth-semester student in the Electronics and Communication department, was returned on Monday via the Integrated Check Post (ICP) at Sutarkandi in Karimganj district.
Superintendent of Police Numal Mahatta clarified that this action was not a deportation but a decision made after discussions with Bangladeshi authorities. “This is not a deportation,” Mahatta said. “She reacted with a love symbol to an anti-India post by her senior, Sahadat Hussain Alfi, an NIT Silchar alumnus who now lives in Bangladesh.”
Mahajabin’s reaction to the post triggered significant controversy, leading to her return. She had requested to return to Bangladesh from NIT Silchar. Mahatta noted that her academic future is uncertain, saying, “She has not completed her studies yet, and it is unclear if she will return to finish her course.”
At present, 70 Bangladeshi students are enrolled at NIT Silchar under a bilateral agreement, with around 40 being Hindu students. Mahatta mentioned that he had advised these students to avoid any actions that might be seen as anti-India.
Suvasish Choudhury, spokesperson for Hindu Rakkhi Dal, commented, “We reported several anti-Indian posts originating from the University of Rajshahi in Bangladesh. Mahajabin supported one such post with a love symbol.”
