The Assam Government has approved the Assam Official Language (Amendment) Bill, 2024, which designates Manipuri as an Associate Official Language in four districts. Passed on August 29, this bill addresses the demands of the Manipuri-speaking community, particularly in the Barak Valley region.

The bill, introduced by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pijush Hazarika on behalf of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, was presented to the Assam Assembly on August 22. It grants Manipuri Associate Official Language status in the Barak Valley districts of Cachar, Hailakandi, and Karimganj, and in Hojai district in central Assam. Chief Minister Sarma emphasized the significant Manipuri-speaking population in these areas and the government’s commitment to recognizing and preserving the state’s diverse linguistic and cultural heritage.
