Imphal:  Manipur police arrested two men on Saturday in Bishnupur District, targeting extortion activities and uncovering a stockpile of weapons.

The first arrest involved Nameirakpam Ningthou Meitei, 42, a known member of the outlawed United People’s Party of Kangleipak (UPPK). He was caught in Thamnapokpi while allegedly extorting money from locals. During his arrest, police confiscated three mobile phones, Rs 10,000 in cash, and a vehicle.

These arrests come amid a rise in extortion incidents in Manipur since the outbreak of ethnic conflict in May 2023. Frustrated residents have described the situation as a money-making racket disguised as efforts for conflict resolution. Business owners in the area have also reported closing their shops due to extortion demands, with some militants allegedly demanding up to ₹5,000 from individuals.

In response to the growing issue, the Manipur Police Control Room confirmed that the movement of essential goods along National Highways 37 and 2 is secure. They also reported the installation of 100 checkpoints across the state and the detention of 166 individuals related to various offenses.
