New Delhi:   Congress MP Bimol Akoijam on Tuesday criticized the central government for its handling of the ongoing crisis in Manipur, accusing it of being “complicit” and indifferent. Akoijam, who represents Inner Manipur, compared the government’s response to the historic insult faced by Draupadi in the Mahabharat, suggesting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision not to visit the state shows a similar disregard for Manipur’s suffering.

Akoijam expressed frustration that Modi has not visited Manipur despite the crisis, stating, “It is insulting… It’s like Draupadi’s vastraharan; people laughed as she cried out. Manipur is in pain, and the Prime Minister’s absence amounts to that laughter. This is an insult.” He questioned why Modi, given that the affected individuals are Indian citizens, has not taken action.

The violence in Manipur, which began in May 2023, has caused over 226 deaths and displaced around 60,000 people. Despite the presence of 60,000 central troops, the violence has continued for more than a year.

Akoijam also criticized Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh for claiming that the BJP’s loss in the state’s Lok Sabha seats reflects on his personal popularity rather than party strength. “Biren Singh is only trying to protect Modi and Amit Shah, even though the central government is failing to maintain law and order,” Akoijam said. He accused Singh of defending Modi and Shah while the central government struggles to address the violence.

Singh has promised to restore peace in Manipur within six months with the Centre’s help, but Akoijam dismissed these assurances as contradictory. “Biren Singh’s statements often change. With the recent resurgence of violence, including drone attacks, it’s clear some groups do not want peace,” Akoijam remarked.

Akoijam also criticized Singh’s refusal to resign, suggesting the Chief Minister’s role is merely symbolic under the central government’s control. He argued that the primary responsibility lies with the central government and called for Modi to intervene directly. “The Prime Minister’s refusal to visit Manipur demonstrates serious indifference. He has traveled to show solidarity with victims of accidents and international issues but neglects Manipur,” Akoijam added.

These remarks come in the wake of recent drone bomb attacks in Imphal West district, which resulted in two deaths and 12 injuries. Akoijam highlighted the collapse of constitutional order in Manipur, with the Chief Minister unable to visit certain areas and thousands displaced and living in relief camps.

Singh has disclosed that he has appointed an emissary to engage with Kuki-zo and Meitei leaders, amidst ongoing clashes that have further destabilized the region.
