Paris: India achieved a historic milestone at the 2024 Paralympic Games by securing five medals in one day, surpassing its previous best from the Tokyo Paralympics. On Tuesday, Indian athletes claimed two silver and three bronze medals, bringing the nation’s total to 20 medals (3 gold, 7 silver, and 10 bronze), thus exceeding the 19 medals won three years ago in Tokyo.
Day six of the Paralympics saw India rise to 17th place overall, thanks to outstanding performances by track and field athletes at the Stade de France. The day’s medal haul was driven by remarkable achievements in the men’s high jump T63 and men’s javelin throw F46 events.
In the men’s high jump T63, Sharad Kumar won the silver medal, while Mariyappan Thangavelu earned a bronze. In the men’s javelin throw F46 final, Ajeet Singh claimed silver, and Sundar Gurjar secured bronze, contributing to India’s growing medal count.
The surge in medals on Monday and Tuesday led to an impressive jump in India’s tally, rising from seven to a record 20 medals.
Adding to the day’s triumphs, India’s world champion Deepthi Jeevanji earned a bronze medal in the women’s 400m T20 category final. The 20-year-old clocked 55.82 seconds, finishing behind gold medalist Yuliia Shuliar of Ukraine and silver medalist Aysel Onder of Turkey.
