Imphal, Sept 10: Curfew has been imposed in Imphal East and Imphal West districts of Manipur today due to the current law and order situation.
Under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, movement outside homes is restricted from September 1, 2024, until further notice. A previously granted relaxation period on September 10 from 5:00 AM to 10:00 PM has been lifted, with the curfew now fully reinstated from 11:00 AM on 10th September 2024 until further notice.
Essential services, including health, electricity, public health engineering, press, and media, are exempt from the curfew, as are municipal staff, power employees, petrol station workers, flight passengers, and media personnel.
The curfew coincides with student protests at Ima Market, which began on September 9. Students had given a 24-hour deadline to Governor Lakshman Acharya to address their demands, expiring at 1 PM today. Despite previous dispersal efforts, students remain at the market and have warned of more intense protests if their demands are not met.
Security forces are closely monitoring the area, and police have instructed protesters to leave Ima Market, but the students have refused.
