The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has ramped up efforts to ensure the safety of women passengers, especially those travelling alone on long-distance trains, through the “Meri Saheli” initiative. This program deploys all-female Railway Protection Force (RPF) teams to provide security and support across the rail network.
Currently, 15 “Meri Saheli” squads, made up of female RPF officers, are stationed at various railway hubs in the NFR zone. These teams are responsible for escorting trains, safeguarding passengers at stations, and offering special assistance to solo female travellers.
In addition to this, NFR has 53 Anti-Human Trafficking Units (AHTU) in operation, aimed at protecting women from traffickers. So far in 2024, four women have been rescued from traffickers, and three traffickers have been apprehended. Up to August this year, six crimes against women were detected, resulting in the arrest of six individuals.
NFR also provides mixed-escort teams, comprising both male and female RPF personnel, on an average of 10 trains. This ensures that female passengers can receive immediate assistance when needed. Furthermore, 46 stations within the zone are equipped with CCTV surveillance to enhance security measures.
Additional precautions, such as securing empty train coaches, have been implemented to prevent criminal activity within railway premises. NFR continues to prioritize women’s safety while also promoting the empowerment of its female personnel as part of their duties.
