Imphal, Sept 11:    Manipur remains tense but stable following violent clashes between students and security forces during a protest march to Raj Bhavan. On Wednesday, Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, who also serves as the Governor of Assam, departed for Guwahati a day after the unrest. Officials confirmed his departure around 10 a.m., though no additional details were provided.

The protests occurred on Tuesday when students attempted to march to Raj Bhavan, demanding the removal of the state’s Director General of Police and security advisor due to their alleged failure in handling the ongoing ethnic violence. The situation escalated when police fired tear gas to disperse the students after they were accused of throwing stones at security forces in Khwairamband and Kakwa Naorem Leikai. Over 55 students were injured and admitted to RIMS hospital.

Curfew remains in effect in Imphal, and extra security personnel have been deployed to prevent further violence. The government also revised its suspension of internet services, restricting the suspension to five valley districts due to the growing tensions.

In a statement released Tuesday night, the Raj Bhavan confirmed that Governor Acharya met with student representatives and assured them that their concerns would be addressed in the best interest of both the students and the people of Manipur. Meanwhile, security forces have continued search operations in Kangpokpi district, recovering arms and explosives, according to police reports.

In light of the ongoing unrest and challenges in Manipur, I believe it may be time to consider declaring a state of emergency and imposing President’s Rule as a potential solution to restore peace and stability. While I understand that some sections of the population may oppose this step, it could serve as the last resort to address the current crisis and bring an end to the violence. It’s crucial that we focus on finding a solution that prioritizes the safety and well-being of all citizens.
