Tensions between Assam and Meghalaya have escalated due to the ongoing “Black Flag Week” protest by the All Khasi Meghalaya Tourist Taxi Association (AKMTTA). Running from September 9 to 14, the protest aims to challenge the influx of out-of-state vehicles bringing tourists to Meghalaya’s attractions.

On September 11, the protest’s impact extended into Assam, leading local taxi drivers to demand that the demonstrations be limited to Meghalaya. Assam drivers argue that the protests pressure the Meghalaya government to impose restrictions on non-state vehicles, affecting tourism-related livelihoods across state lines.

The dispute has been brewing since July, when Assam-registered tourist taxis were barred from popular destinations like Sohra and Dawki by local groups and Meghalaya taxi drivers at Umtyngngar. This incident increased frustration among Assam drivers, who felt unfairly targeted.

A viral video recently captured a heated exchange between Assam and Meghalaya taxi drivers. In the footage, Assam drivers questioned a Meghalaya driver about the black flag on his vehicle, a symbol of the protest. The Assam driver asked, “Why are you displaying the black flag in Assam? This protest is for Meghalaya, not us.” The Meghalaya driver eventually removed the flag, seemingly unaware of its significance, which helped calm the situation.

The AKMTTA has criticized Meghalaya Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh for not addressing their concerns about restrictions on out-of-state vehicles. In response, Lyngdoh stressed the need for unity among local taxi operators and pointed out that nearly 60 percent of Meghalaya’s drivers are not part of any registered association. He also called for better coordination between local and Assam drivers to enhance mutual benefits from tourism.
