Imphal, Sept 12: Manipur MLA Rajkumar Imo Singh announced the replacement of two Assam Rifles units with other central forces, sparking mixed reactions across the state. Singh shared the update via his X account, stating that the move aims to restore peace and stability in the violence-hit region. While some welcomed the decision, others expressed concerns over the security implications.
Singh highlighted that the central government’s decision reflects the wishes of the people, who are seeking stronger measures to tackle the ongoing ethnic unrest in Manipur, which has seen escalating violence in recent months.
However, the move has faced resistance, particularly from the Kuki-Zo community. On September 11, hundreds of Kuki-Zo women gathered in protest at the 22 Assam Rifles Post, blocking the withdrawal of the forces.
One of the protestor, Robi Khongsai, stressed that the Assam Rifles have been a neutral force in maintaining security during the ongoing ethnic conflicts. She warned that replacing them with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) could escalate violence, as the Assam Rifles have proven expertise in dealing with insurgencies.
Khongsai urged the Prime Minister to reconsider the decision, emphasizing the critical role the Assam Rifles play in maintaining peace and preventing further violence in the region. She warned that withdrawing the paramilitary forces would heighten insecurity and deepen the ethnic conflict in Manipur
This protest followed a public meeting on September 9, where the Kuki-Zo community vowed to seal all Assam Rifles camps in Kangpokpi if the government did not reverse its decision.
