The North East Students’ Organization (NESO) on Thursday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit Manipur, which has been experiencing violent unrest for the past 16 months.

NESO is an apex body of eight students’ organisations representing seven NE states.

In a letter addressed to PM Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, NESO called for immediate intervention to resolve the crisis and ensure the safety of the people.

The letter also demanded the formation of a high-level peace committee to work toward a lasting solution in Manipur. NESO Chairman, Samuel B Jyrwa, stressed the need for the Prime Minister to personally assess the situation and provide protection to civilians, particularly women and children who are most at risk during the ongoing violence.

“We urge the Hon’ble Prime Minister to break his silence and visit Manipur to assess the ground situation personally and to provide security to the civilian population of both the communities especially women and children who are the most vulnerable section in this type of conflict. The people of Manipur need to see that their suffering is acknowledged and that concrete actions are being taken to resolve the conflict,” Jyrwa stated.

He further expressed concern over the prolonged silence of the Prime Minister, arguing that the lack of timely intervention has only worsened the situation. Jyrwa warned that the continuing unrest not only threatens Manipur’s stability but also jeopardizes peace in the broader North East region.

NESO also condemned the escalating violence, including recent reports of drone and missile strikes, which have intensified the crisis and deepened the divide between communities. Jyrwa reiterated NESO’s commitment to peace and justice, urging all stakeholders to come together for dialogue and peaceful resolution.

“Violence cannot be the solution to any conflict, and we call upon all communities and stakeholders to embrace dialogue and work together towards restoring peace. NESO is ready to support any constructive efforts to restore peace in Manipur,” Jyrwa concluded.

The organization emphasized the urgency of government action to restore peace and stability in the state.
