Imphal, Sept 13:     Manipur Congress President K. Meghachandra on Friday called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the violence-hit state, stressing that his presence would greatly help in restoring peace and normalcy.

In his letter, Meghachandra highlighted the state’s ongoing unrest, which has continued for over 16 months, and urged the Prime Minister to personally witness the suffering of the people.

“I, on behalf of the people of Manipur and also as a citizen of India from the state of Manipur, invite you for your visit in my state, which has been in turmoil since May 3, 2023. The people of Manipur have been eagerly waiting for your presence to share their voices of helplessness with you,” Meghachandra wrote. He noted that nearly 100,000 people have been internally displaced, and hundreds of lives lost due to the prolonged ethnic violence.

He also pointed out the recent escalation in violence, with drone bombings, RPGs, and missile attacks on civilians since September 1, causing even more fear, pain, and chaos. Meghachandra pleaded for Modi’s visit, stating it would “bring great strength in restoring peace and normalcy” to the state.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh shared Meghachandra’s letter on X, questioning whether the Prime Minister would “finally summon the courage” to visit Manipur. Ramesh also criticized the BJP, citing reports that the state office in Imphal had been ordered to close due to security concerns, while the governor is based in Guwahati, and the chief secretary has been absent from the state for over 45 days.
