CM Biren: War on Drugs Not Community-Specific, Affirms State Belongs to All Tribes

Imphal, Sep 16:   Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Monday stated that the government’s anti-drug campaign is aimed at protecting the state and nation, not targeting any particular community.

Speaking at the Golden Jubilee of the All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU) at the Manipur Press Club, where he called on media outlets to ensure the dissemination of accurate, verified news amid the ongoing crisis in the state. The unrest has led to significant loss of life and forced many residents into relief camps, he noted, emphasizing the media’s crucial role in preventing misinformation during these sensitive times.

Singh revealed that drugs valued at Rs. 60,000 crores have been seized, and 18,000 hectares of poppy fields destroyed as part of the anti-drug campaign. He also highlighted the government’s commitment to conserving Manipur’s reserved forests.

The Chief Minister also pointed out the government’s consistent support for the media, including several welfare schemes for journalists. He invited constructive suggestions from the media to help promote peace and stressed the importance of unity to overcome the state’s challenges.

Reflecting on his personal journey, Singh expressed his emotional connection with the media, noting that he was once a journalist himself. “It’s an emotional day for me. Yesterday, I was one of you, and today, I celebrate this milestone with you,” he said, acknowledging the union’s founders and his former colleagues.

Singh also addressed recent concerns about eviction drives, clarifying that they were carried out across both hill and valley areas, including Heingang and Waithou, and were not aimed at any specific community. He reiterated that the state belongs to all recognized tribes, urging everyone to see themselves as both Indian and Manipuri.

Additionally, Singh requested that YouTubers avoid live streaming protests, cautioning that such broadcasts could provoke further unrest.

The event was attended by the Minister for Information and Public Relations, Dr. Sapam Ranjan Singh, AMWJU President Bijoy Kakchingtabam, Editors’ Guild Manipur President Khogendra Khomdram, and other media representatives.
