Haobam Paban Kumar’s film Joseph’s Son has been honored with a Special Jury Mention at the 20th Kazan International Film Festival in Kazan, Russia. The festival, held from September 6 to 11, 2024, is celebrated for its focus on cultural dialogue and human values.
This accolade follows the previous year’s success of Manipuri filmmaker Romi Meitei, who won Best Direction for Eikhoigi Yum, highlighting the growing global recognition of Manipuri cinema despite ongoing regional issues.
Joseph’s Son portrays a father’s search for his missing son following a football match, set against Manipur’s ethnic conflicts and social divisions. The film, shot in the hill districts of Ukhrul, Kangpokpi, Tamenglong, and Imphal, explores themes of trauma, identity, and resilience. It features dialogue in a blend of Tangkhul, Meiteilon, Thadou, Nepali, and Bihari, with Tangkhul folk singer Rewben Mashangva in the lead role, adding depth and authenticity.
Haobam, who first gained international attention with Loktak Leirembee (Lady of the Lake), continues to bring Manipur’s stories to a global audience with this film. The Kazan International Film Festival, which showcased over 140 films from 40 countries, concluded with an awards ceremony at the Galiasgar Kamal Tatar State Academic Theatre, celebrating a range of compelling narratives.
