Instagram has introduced dedicated teen accounts to create a safer and more personalized experience for younger users. These accounts feature built-in protections that restrict who can contact teens and the content they can view.
Teens will be automatically placed in these accounts, with those under 16 needing parental permission to modify their settings to less restrictive options. To do this, teens must set up parental supervision, allowing parents to monitor and approve any changes.
Additionally, the new accounts will include a feature enabling users to choose specific topics for their Explore feed, ensuring they see more positive and enjoyable content.
Meta plans to roll out these teen accounts in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia within the next 60 days, with availability in the European Union later this year. The global rollout is set for January, with expansion to other Meta platforms in the following year.
To enhance user safety, Meta will also require stricter age verification for teens. The platform is working on technology to identify accounts belonging to younger users, even if they list an adult birthday, ensuring they benefit from the protective measures of the new teen accounts.
