Shillong, Sept 20: In a move aimed at positioning Meghalaya as a football hub, NorthEast United Football Club (NEUFC), with support from the State Government, is set to establish a Residential Football Academy at Mawkhanu in New Shillong Township.
During a ceremony on Thursday, where the NEUFC team was welcomed after their Durand Cup 2024 win, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma highlighted the academy’s potential to elevate football in the state. He announced several upcoming initiatives, including grassroots programs to identify and promote young talent. “We are excited about this collaboration and the positive impact it will have on our football ecosystem,” Sangma said.
The Chief Minister also met with the NEUFC players, describing them as role models for Meghalaya’s youth. He expressed hope that many local talents would one day play for NEUFC and even represent India. “This partnership goes beyond football; it’s about inspiring our youth to dream big,” he added.
The academy is part of a deal signed between the Meghalaya Government and NEUFC on March 14. As part of this agreement, 15 acres of land has been allocated for the academy. Additionally, the Meghalaya Tourism Department has been the main sponsor of the club for the past two seasons.
NEUFC CEO Mandar Tamhane praised the unprecedented support from the state government, noting that such backing is unique compared to other states. He added that the club is working closely with the Tourism Department to foster football at the grassroots level across different districts.
