Tawang, Sept 20: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Friday expressed his pride in participating in the ‘Soul of India Ride’ Flag-In Ceremony at the Tawang War Memorial, paying tribute to Major Ralengnao ‘Bob’ Khathing, who played a pivotal role in securing Tawang for India in 1951. The event highlighted the strategic importance of Tawang, home to the Monpa tribe, and honored Major Khathing’s efforts in extending Indian administration to the McMahon Line.
Khandu recounted how Tawang was vulnerable to external threats after India’s independence until Major Khathing established Indian governance in the area in February 1951. “His bravery ensured our administration reached the nation’s last border,” Khandu said.
To honor Major Khathing’s contributions, the Arunachal Pradesh government announced the creation of the Major Ralengnao Bob Khathing Museum of Valour in Tawang, which will celebrate his life and symbolize India’s unity and shared struggles.
The ‘Soul of India Ride’ was organized to collect soil from historically significant sites across all 28 states and 8 union territories, linked to India’s freedom struggle. These 36 casks of soil will be enshrined at the museum as part of the Soul of India installation.
Khandu expressed his pride in receiving soil from Dipa, Lower Siang, representing India’s unity in diversity. The event also included the unveiling of the Major Bob Khathing Museum logo, the launch of its social media presence, and the release of the ‘My Tawang Story’ poster. Khandu also revealed the jersey for the upcoming Tawang Marathon, an international event organized by the Indian Army and the Arunachal Pradesh government.
