Guwahati, Sept 23: Due to increasing temperatures and a rise in heat-related illnesses among students, the Kamrup Metro District Administration has decided to close all government, provincialized, and private schools in Guwahati from September 24 to 27, 2024. This action follows reports from school leaders about an uptick in cases of illness and fainting attributed to excessive heat and dehydration.
An official order from the District Mission coordinator of the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) noted, “Based on reports from Heads of Institutions regarding incidents of ill-health and fainting, it has been decided that all Govt/Provincialized/Private schools in Kamrup Metro district will remain closed from September 24 to 27 due to excessive heat and rising temperatures.”
District authorities stressed the importance of prioritizing student health by providing a temporary reprieve from the extreme heat. The district mission coordinator underscored the immediate need for compliance from all schools under their jurisdiction.
This initiative aims to protect students from the adverse effects of prolonged exposure to extreme heat, as the Northeast continues to experience record temperatures, with September highs reaching levels not seen in 55 years.
