Kangpokpi, Sept 28: A shutdown that began on Friday has severely disrupted daily life in Manipur’s Churachandpur and Kangpokpi districts. Organized by Kuki-Zo groups, including the Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF) and the Kuki Students Organisation (KSO), the shutdown has closed businesses and halted transportation, according to officials.
The shutdown was triggered by remarks made by Security Advisor Kuldiep Singh, who claimed security forces were responding to reports indicating the possibility of “900 militants” carrying out violence in the peripheral villages of Imphal Valley districts. The state government on Wednesday, however retracted the claim. These comments have drawn sharp criticism from Kuki-Zo groups, who argue that such statements only heighten tensions and contribute to unrest.
Despite the extensive disruptions, officials report no violent incidents so far.
Meanwhile, in a separate development, suspected militants attacked Mongbung Meitei village in Jiribam district. The attackers fired from nearby hilltops, prompting local volunteers to retaliate. Vulnerable residents, including women, children, and the elderly, have been evacuated to safety, and security forces have been deployed to contain the situation and prevent further casualties.
