Imphal, Sept 29:  The World Meetei Council has urgently requested Chief Minister N. Biren Singh to expedite the submission of two vital reports regarding the ethnic and socio-economic conditions of the Meetei community. These reports are crucial for starting the process to include the Meetei community in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) list.

In their letter to the Chief Minister, the Council referred to a recent Supreme Court ruling on reservations, which allows for a sub-quota within the larger quota for different tribes, alleviating concerns about unfair competition among Scheduled Tribes. The Council urged CM Singh to acknowledge that these legal developments address worries about the Meetei community potentially receiving an unequal share of benefits if granted ST status.

The letter also mentioned recent attempts to undermine the World Meetei Council, including a meeting of a faction claiming to represent the WMC, reportedly supported by the Chief Minister, at the City Convention Centre in Imphal. Despite these obstacles, the Council remains committed to ensuring a stable and prosperous future for the Meetei people.

With the 2026 Delimitation of Assembly and Parliamentary seats approaching, the Council warned that the Meetei community’s future is uncertain. It emphasized that if the Delimitation process occurs before the Meetei are recognized in the ST list, the impact could be severe.

In a concluding note, the World Meetei Council urged CM Singh to quickly submit the two reports to the Government of India. The Council stated that if this matter remains unresolved, they may have no choice but to call for the Chief Minister’s resignation and seek new leadership that can advocate for the Meetei community’s interests.
