SENAPATI, September 30: The Ministry of Home Affairs has announced the resumption of tripartite talks with the United Naga Council (UNC) following a memorandum from the organization.

In a letter to the Chief Secretary of Manipur, the ministry confirmed receipt of the UNC’s memorandum dated September 11, 2024, referenced in a subsequent communication from the Manipur government on September 25, 2024.

The letter also stated that Shri A.K. Mishra, Advisor (North East), has been appointed to represent the Ministry of Home Affairs in the discussions. The State Government is instructed to notify the UNC of this decision and to proceed with any necessary arrangements for the upcoming talks. This move signifies a critical step toward addressing the concerns raised by the UNC, which has been vocal in advocating for the rights and recognition of the Naga community.

The tripartite talk between the United Naga Council (UNC), Manipur Government and the Government of India follows the arbitrary creation of seven new districts by bifurcating parent districts on December 8, 2016, during the Congress regime without the informed consent and knowledge of the stakeholders-dishonouring the four memoranda between the government of Manipur and the Naga people besides the assurance from the government of India in 2011.

The UNC demanded the rollback of “arbitrary creation” of seven new districts and reinstated the status quo in the spirit of four standing MoUs and assurance of the government of India.
