Guwahati, Oct 2: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reported on Wednesday that 14 Bangladeshi nationals were arrested while attempting to illegally enter India. The arrests occurred in the South Salmara and Karimganj districts based on intelligence information.
Sarma announced the apprehensions on the social media platform X, stating that the Assam Police detained the individuals in response to intelligence inputs. He noted that nine of those arrested were found to be in possession of Indian Aadhaar cards.
The individuals arrested have been identified as Md. Ariful Islam, Md. Monir Hussain, Mofazal Hussain, Md. Mizanur Rahman, Abyadullah Hassan, Ashraful Islam, Manik Miah, Nobi Hussain, Waliul Ullah, Hazarat Ali, Sofikul Islam, Furkan Ali, Mominul Haque, and Md. Anwar Hussain.
The Chief Minister highlighted that, following recent unrest in Bangladesh, Assam has increased its border surveillance, leading to the apprehension of a total of 108 illegal infiltrators in recent weeks.
Sarma reassured the public that, although some infiltrators obtained Aadhaar cards, they could not register on the voters’ list. “There is no chance that people from Bangladesh can cross the international border and enroll in the voters’ list in Assam,” he stated, emphasizing the swift action taken to push back those who illegally entered the country.
He also expressed the state’s determination to enhance measures for identifying illegal immigrants, acknowledging that some may have escaped capture. “We are implementing various strategies to detect illegal immigrants from Bangladesh,” he concluded.
