Shillong, Oct 4: Continuous heavy rainfall has led to severe landslides and flash floods throughout the Garo Hills region, tragically claiming the life of one woman and injuring several others today. Rescue operations, spearheaded by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), are in progress, with a focus on areas such as Silkigre Primary Health Centre (PHC), where immediate assistance is urgently needed.
A fatal landslide occurred in Koinadubi, Dalu, around 7:30 to 8:00 AM, resulting in the death of 57 year old woman while her 29 year old daughter was injured and taken to the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Dalu. The landslide struck unexpectedly while they were in their kitchen.
Local authorities are urging residents in at-risk areas to evacuate. The District Commissioner of West Garo Hills has requested additional support from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), while the SDRF continues its rescue and relief initiatives.
In other developments, the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL) and the Public Works Department (Roads) have cleared the Dalu-Tura National Highway, re-establishing access to some affected regions.
Extensive damage has been reported in various areas, including Reserve Gittim, Modoltila, Rishipara, Hawakhana, Sweeper Colony, Kamipara, Sunny Hills, Matchikolgre, and Akonggre, with assessment teams from the Tura Municipal Board (TMB) and the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) currently evaluating the situation.
